Then and now
We are passing through very critical times in the history of the world. When we glance around us, things appear to be moving from bad to worse. The life today has become more difficult and complicated when compared to what it was a century ago. Then, there were fewer resources, far less scientific inventions; and people lived under challenging situations, but they were happy and contented. Their mainstay of livelihood was agriculture and related industries. Even though everything depended on Lord Varuna, land used to give plentifully. Rice was tasty. There was more land and less people to feed. There was poverty, but people lived a community-centered life of contentment. They lived in mutual co-operation. It was a time when villages had not become town and towns had not grown into big cities. There was no pollution. People could breathe easily. There were fewer diseases and mental ailments. People used to exert willingly and live happily.
Scrutinizing the present situation
What has happened now that I am being compelled to write this in the editorial? In spite of the pace with which science has progressed, with newest of inventions in all walks of life, increased number of talented and intellectual people, revolution in the field of transport and communications - why is it that we are living with such a inferior community life when it comes to ideals? We should have been happy and contented to live in free India. Then, why is it that we are restless, sad, mentally ill and growing more and more effete and debauched by the day? Indecency and sexual crimes are on the rise. We seem to be moving more and more towards disintegrating situations. Our youth are immersed in fun and frolic. The principle is – ‘As long as you live, live with reckless abandon. Take loan and drink ghee (live luxuriously)’. The young couples of today do not even care about their own people of the older generation.
Market and ‘Sale’
If we analyze the situations prevalent today, the analysis comes to a stop at this point – an average citizen, belonging to our country or any other; be it someone who earns quite well or not; all of them have deteriorated when it comes to behavior or character. Media is fast gaining coverage in the entire world. We get information and news from any nook and corner of the world almost instantaneously. Internet speeds are increasing by the day, thus uniting the world like never before. But is it being utilized properly? Are we able to communicate the thought-force for wiping away terrorism using that medium? Are we able to make accessible the spiritual knowledge of personality development that has been existing since ages (and is beyond the distorted version of religion that exists today) to the common man? Probably not! Because the thinking is not right, we are not able to harness the strengths that we have. There is an atmosphere of ‘market’ all around. Everything is out on sale – clothes, items of daily use, even character and honesty. Everything is being sold today. Whoever has money can buy.
This was never seen before
Recently, a six acre plot in prime area of Mumbai was sold for 4000 crores. This was the most expensive sale in the entire world. If something is expensive, there are people who are ready to pay that expense and buy it. This principle has been observed to be applicable in all walks of life. Has man become so cheap that anyone can buy him? Let us see – we elect the members of the parliament, but the moment they are elected they are ready to get sold. This is not a situation that exists in our country alone. It is the same thing even in Great Britain which was once extolled as the ‘Crown under which the sun never sets’. Every officer, be it IPS or IAS, or any person who holds high position; the moment he falls in this well that contains intoxicants (this world), he goes crazy.
Had we thought of this?
The people who sacrificed their lives to get us independence; those who had proudly and happily martyred their lives for the cause of freedom; had they ever thought that such inferior and useless people will inherit the land they had freed? Whichever field we see, we see majority of people lacking character and morality. In that case, can a few people who are thinking positively and with right values do something about this situation? Since such people are not able to group together, we see their capabilities getting wasted. An effort here and there for reversing the rapid downward slide is being made in every field. But why are those efforts not being encouraged? Why are their success stories not getting highlighted? Why do the media not focus on such efforts instead of spreading spicy news about politicians and film stars? Can we conclude that they are not interested in spreading the positivity?
The doctrine of faith
If we look towards religion, we have to face bigger disappointment. This is a system that is at par with government in terms of power of wealth. They have exploited the faith of the masses and erected fiefdoms of billions of rupees. If they wished and willed, they could have transformed the country. There are countless number of ashrams, mahants, mahamandaleswars, but we do not see any improvement anywhere. When our words are not in tune with our actions, where will improvement come from? There was a time when one Adi Shankaracharya (800 AD) had achieved cultural sway over the entire nation, united it, had imparted the spiritual thought-process and taught people the noble way of life. Today, there are many self-proclaimed shankaracharyas and mandaleswars, but they have no common platform to mobilize the masses toward righteousness. The mind of the masses understands the language of religion and faith. This is the specialty of our nation. This was observed during the Maha Kumbh Mela earlier this year (14th January to 28th April 2010). But have we been able to give right direction to the sea of devotees who thronged there?
The intelligentsia has gone astray
If we think of a reason, it appears that the so-called intelligentsia of our nation has lost their way. They have accepted the darkness. They have made a pact with Tamas and have accepted darkness as their heir. A famous poet and a sincere devotee of Poojya Gurudev, Mangal Vijay had written a poem titled “Moordhanyo Jago” 35 years ago with the intention of inspiring the intelligentsia. That poem is applicable to the situation today. This applies very well to all groups, whether belonging to education, arts, industry and commerce, politics, governance, etc. Swami Vivekanand had declared us all as the sons of Immortality based on a statement in Upanishads (Shrunvantu vishwe amrutasya putraha). But, somewhere down the lane, these children of immorality have gone astray. Somewhere, they have turned their faces away from their sacred responsibilities. They have embraced darkness. A person who does not execute the Yug dharma and is immersed in his own self-enjoyment will be tagged as a selfish person. Mahakal will never spare such people. Based on the rule of collective punishment, they will have to be collectively chastised.
Spiritual development should be our goal
Value-based life, culture-based life, spiritual life is the only solution to all the problems that exist today. If basic values have got neglected today, it is possible to re-establish them by noble living. It is the duty of voluntary organizations and the small number of enlightened people to encourage and spread this way of life by first living it themselves. This task will be accomplished by those who are different from people who encourage fanaticism and those who make tall claims. When this message of universal and scientific spirituality reaches not only the masses of our own nation but the entire world, fanaticism, terrorism, communal violence and naxalism will automatically be wiped away. There will be a non-violent revolution and the type of independence that our patriotic leaders dreamt of, will indeed be achieved.
The biggest Mahabharat of today
Gayatri Parivar, under the inspiration and guidance of its Gurusatta has given the clarion call for Thought Revolution. The situations which have arisen out of evil-mindedness can be reversed only by noble thoughts. Thoughts alone can fight with thoughts; hence all problems will be solved by Gyan Yagya. Life will become transparent. People will understand the real importance of ethics and values. Generations of high-souled people will be born. This task has to be taken up on a war-footing. This is the biggest Mahabharat of today. Especially, this year and the coming year are of very special importance to humanity because it is during this time that the entire history of humanity will be re-written in a completely new way. Invisible divine powers are also on our side. Can we create an atmosphere where in this process can gather the speed and intensity of a storm?
The enlightened souls in Gayatri Parivar
Enlightened souls have to play a decisive role in this Mahabharat for the victory of Dharma. Such people are present in Gayatri Parivar and many other voluntary organizations. But the present crisis has benumbed them. Will they be able to wake up and take some bold decisions now for the benefit of our religion-culture-humanity? They had joined hands with this very objective before, but the passage of time has cast a pall of stupor and indolence. They too have busied themselves with amassing riches and comforts. Will they be able to do some self-introspection? Will their inner being admonish them?
If the elite and scientific specialists in the society are asleep, who can save humanity from this pain, downfall and defeat? This is our clarion call to all readers of this magazine, well-wishers of humanity, every person who is looking forward to the return of Satyug. This is the right time for us to identify our powers and put them to right use. If we cooperate completely with Mahakal in this campaign for the next three years, then the history of the world after 2013 will be worth appreciating. Come! Let us prepare every enlightened person for this task by enrolling ourselves in the vanguard of the warriors of Light.
