Save the Planet Earth through
Creative Arts
We are all aware of global warming, pollution of rivers and oceans, rapid extinction of rare animal species and so on. Many options, like conserving water, tree plantation, conserving energy, travel less by automotive vehicles, etc have been suggested by the experts. They can be used by individuals and groups in contributing towards saving the planet earth and the surrounding atmosphere.
A novel idea could be to create awareness about environmental pollution, depleting natural resources, and related issues through the medium of creative arts. Creative art touches the emotions of people and awakens their empathy and inspires them to act rightly on the global issues. There are several dimensions of art.
Many writers and artists have displayed numerous masterpieces related to environment. Various campaigns have been launched and efforts have been made to make the earth better, greener, and more beautiful. In parallel, new theaters, parks, buildings, roads were built – alas, if only at the time of construction the focal stress was on preserving the ecology of earth, rather than just its artistic creation.
Several efforts have been made to clean the Ganga River at Banaras, Patna, Kanpur, Allahabad and Yamuna at Agra. These efforts are failing because there is lack of awareness among the common people. This is the area where artists can play a major role in maintaining the sanctity of Ganga- Yamuna and other rivers. To save the water is to save the earth. Every single drop of clean water expresses the purity of earth. Increasing pollution and dirt in it are not only distorting its beauty, but also making it unhealthy.
Fresh waterfalls, along with pleasant sounds from flowing clean rivers attract people’s minds, because they have natural beauty; but when these same waterfalls and rivers become polluted, toxic, and foul smelling, nobody likes to go near them or use their water. Therefore, if we want to save nature, we have to make people aware of the consequences of pollution in nature, its adverse consequences, and put forth beautiful and clean images of nature. Various forms of creative art can do this work. Awareness regarding the environment can be created in the public through music, songs, writing, painting, architecture, movies, videos etc. A good way to enhance humanity’s future is increasing the interaction between these artists and scientists. Scientists have been engaged in securing and improving the earth by various means, and they need support of artists to express these findings effectively and sensitively.
The scientific warnings related to global warming can be well expressed with the aid of music, theater, and poetry. Phanishwar Nath Renu’s novel titled Maila Aanchal depicted a clear image of social and political conditions effectively after India’s independence. Other novelists can also follow suit to disseminate awareness about the present scenario of global aspects of pollution. Art makes this world beautiful and it also enhances our inner expression. Various art forms can suggest many creative ways to safeguard the water, forests, and earth, while effortlessly connecting our minds with them. If the artists, creators, and scientists work together by using their unique mediums of expression, then the earth will be saved and will again become beautiful. Art holds the power to inspire us and motivate us to do auspicious work through its beauty and creativity. Art can inspire us to keep the nature clean, pretty, and safe. For example, the effect of music is amazing on both humans and animals. According to the scientists, the effect of music is very positive on the growth of the crops, cows producing more milk, and it is also possible to treat some diseases through music therapy.
Thus, through music/songs, people can be made aware of the current state of nature and can be motivated to take some important steps towards nature conservation. Similarly, drawing, painting, architecture, theater drama, street drama, and various forms of dance can be used to strengthen the relationship between people and nature.
Thus, human beings will become aware of the atrocities they have inflicted on nature, and through a cooperative group effort, take firm steps to save earth and its inhabitants.
