Vedangas means 'the limbs of the Vedas.' The Vedangas consist of six treatises and are regarded as auxiliary to, and in some sense a part of, the Vedas.
The six Vedangas discuss the following six subjects:
Siksha (correct pronunciation),
Chandas (metre),
Nirukta (etymology),
Vyakarana (grammar),
Jyotisha (astronomy),
aud Kalpa (rules governing rites and rituals).
The Upa Vedas or the subsidiary Vedas include Ayurveda, military science, music, dance and politics.
